This year's Sacramento Museum Day will be held on February 2, 2013.
On this day, over 30 museums open their doors to the community by providing free or reduced cost admission. We love museum day because it gives the community access to all the museums. Especially for those people who otherwise would not be able to visit these museums.
We love to go to museums. We take Doll Face to as many museums as we can. We have been to many of the Sacramento museums in the past. Here are a couple of our favorites:
The California Railroad Museum-
Is a fun and informative museum. If you love trains, like we do, you will love this museum. The highlights of this museum are all the interactive displays and the kid's area. Doll Face loves coming here. She often runs around the trains and she can spend hours playing in the kid's zone. This is definitely our favorite museum in Sacramento.
The California Museum-
Is a fun museum and a great way to learn about California's history. The museum has amazing displays and great art work. This museum is geared towards older children and adults. Doll Face had a good time at this museum because we engaged her through out the whole experience. So, it is not impossible to take a toddler and have a good time.
Highlights: The display of the great people of California and history of native people.
The Sacramento Children's Museum-
I have no idea why I don't have a link to a post of our experience at the Sacramento Children's Museum. We have been to the SCM a couple of times and each time we had a blast. Okay, let me rephrase that, Doll Face has had a blast. The museum is small. I mean really small. I have heard from other people that on Museum Day it can get crowded and there is always a line out the door. From my understanding, last year SCM gave people appointment times to come back and after they ran out of times, they simply closed the list. So...if you want to go to this museum on museum day, your best bet would be to go here first and get there before they open. Trust me, I am sure there will be a line and since the museum is tiny, it cannot accommodate a lot of people.
About our experience: this museum was really hands on. Doll Face got her hands, and clothes, dirty. There is a splash area where kids can play with water and get really soaked. A painting area that allows the kids to paint on a glass wall. This was my favorite part. And many other interactive displays. In a nut shell, this place is great. Definitely a great place to take your children.
The Governor's Mansion-
I loved the guided tour that we took of the Governor's Mansion. The guide was friendly and kind especially towards Doll Face. She gave us plenty of time to explore and answer any questions we had regarding the history of the Governor's Mansion. Definitely a must see.
Aerospace Museum of California-
The best part of this experience? The volunteers are retired veterans. When you go out to the plane yard, you get accompanied by a veteran. This gives you the opportunity to ask questions and get a chance to hear some amazing oral history from the veterans.*
Highlights: The planes and the upstairs kid zone. Don't forget some money for the gift shop.
*We actually went during the Summer and not on Museum day. I am going to assume that the volunteers will be extremely busy on Museum day so you might or might not hear any history. I just wanted to throw that out there for you to know.
Tips on making your Museum day successful:
1. Go Early. The lines will be long and the wait will be hideous. Avoid this as much as possible by going early. If you can, go to the most popular museums first. I know last year the Sacramento Children's Museum was closed because there were too many people.
2. Plan your day. Make sure you take a look at the Sacramento Museum website and plan accordingly. Evaluate where you want to go and tailor your game plan.
3. Be realistic. While it might be fun to visit as many museums as you can in one day. You have to be realistic and realize that just might not happen. I think 2 museums is a good number if you have children and 3 if you do not. Anything beyond this number would be too much work and would interfer with you getting a complete experience.
4. Use public transportation when you can.
5. Pack snacks and lunch. If you are going to go to more than one museum, your best bet is to pack a lunch. Helping you save time, especially if you are going to be visiting museums with young children.
6. Have fun. The whole point of this day is to have a good time learning about different topics.
Enjoy! See you at the Museum.
